The Best Time to Book Flights (What the Data Says)
Airzix · 10 August 2026

"Book as early as possible" is the advice everyone repeats, and it's wrong. Fares follow a U-shaped curve: expensive far out, expensive at the last minute, and cheapest in a window in between. Here's where that window actually falls.
Domestic: 1 to 3 months out
For flights inside the country, prices tend to bottom out roughly one to three months before departure. Inside two weeks, fares climb sharply as airlines sell the last seats to travelers who have no choice but to buy.
International: 2 to 8 months out
Long-haul routes need more lead time. The sweet spot runs from about two to eight months ahead, and popular summer and holiday routes sit at the earlier end — demand fills those planes long before departure.
The cheapest days to fly
The day you fly matters more than the day you book. Midweek departures are almost always cheaper than weekends:
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Saturday
Avoid these booking traps
Before you buy, sidestep the usual mistakes:
- Waiting for a "perfect" price that never comes
- Booking round-trips when two one-ways are cheaper
- Ignoring the fare on nearby dates
- Forgetting to factor in baggage fees
> The window matters, but flexibility beats timing every time. One movable date usually saves more than a perfectly timed purchase.
Learn the pattern once and you stop refreshing prices in hope — you just buy in the window and move on.
